The Futility of Forced Silence

Silence cannot be forced. It flowers when the mind is understood.

Sit down and try to make the mind quiet. Notice what you are doing. There is a part of you issuing instructions and another part failing to comply, and the whole arrangement is considerably noisier than the state you began in.

This is not a failure of technique. It is what the technique is. The demand for silence is itself an activity of the mind, and no activity of the mind produces its own absence.

The controller is not separate

Watch closely during a session. There appears to be a meditator and a mind to be meditated upon — one calm and intentional, the other wayward. This division feels self-evident. It is the central illusion of the practice.

The controller is made of the same material as the thing it controls. It is thought, in the costume of the one who observes thought. When it succeeds in suppressing a stream of chatter, it has not produced silence; it has produced a quieter, more concentrated form of effort, which the practitioner then mistakes for stillness because it is more pleasant.

Why the mind is noisy

Chatter is not random. It is functional. The mind rehearses because something is unresolved. It replays a conversation because a position was not defended. It plans because a future is not secure. It fantasises because a present is unbearable.

Suppressing the noise leaves every one of those causes intact. The pressure simply moves. This is why people can maintain a disciplined practice for twenty years and remain exactly as reactive as when they began — occasionally more so, because a new identity has been built on top of the old one, and it too must be defended.

To silence a mind that has not been understood is to put a lid on a boiling pot and call the room calm. On the practice of stillness

Understanding as the only door

The alternative is unglamorous and cannot be scheduled. It is to watch the movement of the mind without the intention to change it. Not to accept it, which is another position, and not to fight it, which is the old error. Simply to see the thing as it moves — where the fear enters, what the wanting is attached to, why the same conversation is replayed for the eleventh time.

What is genuinely seen does not need to be suppressed. It ends by itself, because the energy sustaining it was the energy of not looking.

Silence as a by-product

When it comes — and it does — it is not the silence that was aimed at. It has no ceremony about it. It is often noticed only afterwards: an hour passed, things were done, and there was no commentary running underneath. Nothing was achieved. Something simply stopped, because it had run out of fuel.

That is why it cannot be manufactured. You cannot arrange for something to stop by pushing on it. You can only understand it so thoroughly that it has no further reason to continue.
