You are not seeing the room. You are seeing a model of the room, built a fraction of a second ago, from a fraction of the available information, and continuously corrected. The correction is so fast and so seamless that the model feels like direct contact.
It is not a philosophical position. It is the ordinary operation of a nervous system, and it has consequences that go well beyond optics.
The eye supplies less than you think
There is a hole in each retina where the optic nerve leaves — a region with no receptors at all. You have never noticed it. The brain fills the gap with whatever seems most likely given the surroundings, and presents the completed image without any indication that part of it was invented.
This is not a defect. It is the design. Perception is not a recording; it is a prediction, checked against sense data and updated only where the mismatch is large enough to matter.
From optics to psychology
The same machinery that completes a visual gap completes a social one. You meet someone for eleven seconds and a full character is generated: their competence, their motives, how they will behave under pressure. Almost none of this came from the eleven seconds. It came from a library of prior people, sorted by resemblance.
And, crucially, the generated character does not arrive labelled as a guess. It arrives as perception — as something you simply see about them.
- You do not conclude that a stranger is untrustworthy; you perceive untrustworthiness.
- You do not infer that a room is hostile; the room feels hostile.
- You do not decide your partner is withdrawing; you observe it, and the observation is half memory.
Conditioning is a perceptual apparatus
This is the point at which the enquiry stops being academic. Conditioning is usually described as a set of beliefs — things you were taught and could, in principle, argue yourself out of. That description is far too generous to the arguing.
Conditioning operates one level below belief. It shapes what reaches you as data in the first place. By the time a belief is available for examination, the perception that seemed to justify it has already been assembled by the very structure under examination.
You cannot think your way out of a distortion that is applied before thinking begins.
So what can be done?
Not correction — you cannot inspect a projector from inside the projection. But something else is available: noticing the moment of completion. There is a small interval between the arrival of sense data and the arrival of the finished, interpreted, obvious-seeming world. With attention, that interval becomes perceptible.
You catch yourself completing a sentence someone has not finished. You catch the character assembling around a face. You catch the story forming about why they did not reply.
What changes
Not the projection — it continues; the nervous system has no other mode. What changes is the relationship to it. A model held as a model behaves differently from a model held as reality. It can be revised. It stops requiring defence. It admits of the sentence that ends most unnecessary conflict: I might be constructing this.
The world does not become less vivid. It becomes provisional, which is the only honest thing it ever was.
