Attention Is the Whole of It

One faculty, and everything else downstream of it.

A range of mist-layered ridges beneath a low sun

Strip away the vocabulary of every tradition and the same instrument remains: where attention goes, and for how long, and whether it was placed or captured.

Your inner life is not made of your circumstances. It is made of what you have been attending to, and almost none of that was chosen.

Placed and captured

Attention arrives in two modes. It is captured by whatever is loudest — a notification, a threat, a grievance with unfinished business. It is placed when something in you decides where it goes and holds it there against the pull.

Most adults go weeks without placing attention for more than a few consecutive minutes. Not from weakness — from an environment engineered, at considerable expense, to capture it.

The practice, which is not a practice

There is nothing to install. Attention already works. What is required is repetition of one small act: noticing that it has been captured, and returning it. Not with irritation — irritation is a further capture — simply returning it, the way you would pick up something dropped.

You do not have to be good at this. You only have to keep doing it after you have been bad at it.

Ten thousand returns, and the returning becomes the habit rather than the capture. That is the entire method. Everything else — the cushion, the posture, the tradition — is scaffolding for this one movement.
