The Watcher Is the Watched

The last division, and what happens when it is examined honestly.

A range of mist-layered ridges beneath a low sun

All inner work seems to require a division. There is anger, and there is the one who notices the anger. There is craving, and there is the one who watches it move. The whole apparatus of self-knowledge depends on this arrangement, and it is enormously useful in the early stages.

It is also, on close inspection, not what is happening.

Follow the observer

Anger arises. You watch it. Now ask: what is the watcher made of?

It has preferences — it would rather the anger were not there. It has a history — it remembers being angry before, and has views about what that means. It has an aim — it is watching in order to be free of the thing it watches.

Preferences, history, aims. These are the constituents of the anger itself. The observer is assembled from the same material as the observed, and its apparent separateness comes entirely from its position in the sequence: it is the part currently doing the looking.

Why this matters practically

Because as long as the division holds, conflict is guaranteed. The observer wants something the observed is not providing. That wanting is effort, and effort applied to a state of mind reliably strengthens it — you cannot get rid of anger by an act of will that is itself agitated.

Whole lifetimes are spent in this loop: the watcher struggling to improve the watched, both being the same movement, the struggle producing precisely the friction it intended to remove.

When the observer is the observed, conflict ends — not because it was resolved, but because there were never two parties to it.

What ending the division is not

It is not a merger you perform. Any attempt to make the two into one is the observer acting again, with a subtler aim. Nor is it a philosophical position to hold, which would be the same error wearing a robe.

It is a perception, and it either occurs or it does not. What can be done is to keep looking honestly until the assumption of separateness stops being invisible.

After

Descriptions of what follows are unreliable and mostly unhelpful, since anyone who has not seen it will convert the description into an image to be pursued — which is the observer, again, with a new goal.

What can be said modestly: something that was consuming a great deal of energy stops. The anger, when it arises, is simply anger — arising, complete, and passing — with nothing standing beside it taking notes.
