Escape the Matrix of Conditioning

There is no exit door. There is only seeing the walls.

A range of mist-layered ridges beneath a low sun

The metaphor of escape is the problem. It implies an outside — a place where the conditioned mind is not, which one might travel to by sufficient effort or the right teaching. And so people leave. They leave the religion, the country, the political tribe, the career, and arrive somewhere new with the entire apparatus intact, ready to be filled with different content.

The convert is the most reliable evidence that conversion changes very little.

What conditioning actually is

Not a set of opinions. A set of reflexes: what makes you comfortable, what makes you defensive, whose approval registers, which sentences you can hear without heat. These were installed early, largely without language, and they operate faster than deliberation.

You can change your opinions in an afternoon. The reflexes take considerably longer, and they are what actually run your life.

The three walls

Belonging

A mind will bend its perception a long way to remain in good standing with its group. This is not weakness; groups were, for most of human history, the whole of survival. But it means that the boundary of your thinking is very often the boundary of what your people will tolerate, and you will experience that boundary as the edge of what is reasonable.

Continuity

Whatever you have believed for a long time acquires a claim on you independent of its truth. To abandon it is to concede that years were spent wrongly, which the self-image will not permit cheaply. So evidence is metabolised into support, and the position hardens exactly as it should be softening.

Comfort

Some conclusions are load-bearing. Remove them and things you depend on become uncertain: that your work matters, that your suffering had a purpose, that someone is in charge. The mind protects these not because it is convinced but because it is frightened, and it will not report the fear as fear. It will report it as certainty.

The only move available

Not escape. Observation, applied to yourself, in situations that are actually uncomfortable — which is why almost no one does it. It is easy to observe your conditioning in the abstract. It is difficult in the eleven seconds after someone says something that makes you angry.

Freedom is not a place you reach. It is what is left when the reflex is seen before it completes.

The reflex will still fire. You do not get to disable it. But there is a gap — small at first, and it widens — between the firing and the acting, and everything worth calling freedom happens in that gap.

That is the whole practice. There is no other one, and nobody can perform it for you.
